Zoe Saldaña Breaks Records as Highest-Grossing Actor

Zoe Saldaña has officially become the highest-grossing actor of all time, surpassing Scarlett Johansson with a worldwide box office total exceeding $15.47 billion. The milestone was achieved after the December 2025 release of James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” which has generated $1.23 billion globally as of mid-January 2026.

The 47-year-old actress secured the historic achievement less than a month after the third installment of the Avatar franchise premiered in theaters, with the film earning $344 million domestically and $888 million internationally. Her record-breaking success marks a significant moment in Hollywood, solidifying her status as one of the industry’s most bankable stars.

A Career Built on Blockbuster Franchises

Saldaña’s ascension to the top stems from her starring roles in some of cinema’s most commercially successful films. She is the only actor to appear in four movies that individually grossed over $2 billion worldwide: “Avatar” (2009, $2.9 billion), “Avengers: Endgame” (2019, $2.8 billion), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022, $2.3 billion), and “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018, $2.05 billion).

Beyond these tentpole franchises, Saldaña has contributed to major box office successes including the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy and the “Star Trek” reboot films, each generating over $1 billion worldwide. This diverse portfolio of blockbuster roles demonstrates her consistent appeal across multiple fan bases and franchises.

Recent Oscar Victory Adds to Legacy

The accomplishment caps an extraordinary period for the actress, who won her first Academy Award in 2025 for Best Supporting Actress in the controversial musical “Emilia Pérez.” Her Oscar win marked a historic moment—she became the first American of Dominican origin to win an Academy Award, an achievement she celebrated emotionally during her acceptance speech.

“I am a proud child of immigrant parents, with dreams and dignity and hardworking hands,” she said while accepting the award. “I am the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award, and I know I will not be the last.”

The Competition Remains Fierce

Saldaña’s record displaced Johansson, who recently held the title after “Jurassic World Rebirth” propelled her total to $14.8 billion in July 2025. Samuel L. Jackson now ranks third with approximately $14.6 billion in box office earnings, followed by Robert Downey Jr. at $14.3 billion and Chris Pratt at $14.1 billion.

Looking Ahead

Saldaña is expected to reprise her role as Neytiri in the planned fourth and fifth “Avatar” films, scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031 respectively, suggesting her box office total will continue to climb in the coming years. Despite her extraordinary commercial success, the mother of three did not appear on Forbes’ recent list of the world’s highest-paid actors, indicating a distinction between box office performance and individual earnings.
