Massive YouTube Outage Disrupts Streaming for Hundreds of Thousands Across the U.S.
Google’s video streaming platform experienced a widespread outage on Tuesday evening, leaving hundreds of thousands of users unable to access core features. The disruption, which began around 7:45 p.m. ET, expanded rapidly across the country, with nearly 300,000 reports flooding DownDetector by 8 p.m. ET.
The outage primarily affected YouTube’s homepage, subscription feed, and Shorts feature across both the web and mobile app. Users attempting to load YouTube were met with blank screens or loading errors, though direct video links and embedded content remained accessible. YouTube TV also experienced issues, with thousands of additional reports, though the service remained partially functional for many subscribers.
Geographic Impact and User Reports
The outage hit certain regions particularly hard. West Coast users in San Francisco and Los Angeles reported the heaviest concentration of problems, while New York experienced the most widespread issues on the East Coast. Users across the country took to social media to report their inability to watch videos, browse subscriptions, or access the platform’s core features.
Notably, YouTube Music appeared unaffected during the incident, though Google Search itself also experienced a spike in reported problems. Some users who weren’t impacted by the initial waves began reporting normal service by 6:15 p.m. PST, suggesting the outage’s effects were not entirely uniform across all regions.
Google’s Response and Resolution
Initially, Google remained silent on its official channels, with the YouTube account’s last post from four hours prior discussing cooking creators rather than addressing the service disruption. However, by 8:20 p.m. ET, Google acknowledged the issue in a forum post, stating: “We’re aware some of you are having issues accessing YouTube right now. Our teams are aware, and we’ll provide updates as soon as we have them.”
By the time of initial reporting, YouTube services appeared to be partially resolving, though full restoration across all regions and features had not been confirmed. The company pledged to provide additional updates as the situation developed.
