Walton Goggins: How Emotional Exhaustion Enhanced Fallout Role
Actor Walton Goggins has revealed that his emotional depletion from back-to-back demanding projects directly improved his performance in Prime Video’s Fallout Season 2, giving authentic depth to his dual portrayal of Cooper Howard and The Ghoul.
In a candid interview, Goggins explained that arriving on the Fallout set immediately after completing The White Lotus left him emotionally raw and exhausted. “We filmed that day the morning after the premiere of The White Lotus; I had about three hours of sleep. I just had nothing left in the tank; it was exactly where I needed to be for that day,” he shared.
Drawing from Personal Experience
The actor said the exhaustion extended beyond a single scene. After The White Lotus wrapped, he went directly to The Righteous Gemstones, where he played Baby Billy—another emotionally demanding role. “I was depleted after White Lotus, as anyone on that journey was,” Goggins noted. “I left that just crawling across the finish line to arrive here.”
This emotional vulnerability proved essential for Fallout Season 2. “In some ways, I think it’s the best thing that could happen to me, because then I was just splayed open emotionally. That’s what was required of both Cooper Howard and The Ghoul this season,” he explained.
Beyond his professional exhaustion, Goggins drew on personal struggles for his character’s arc. A particularly poignant moment came when filming scenes of Cooper Howard missing his child—a parallel to Goggins’ own experience being away from his family during production.
“It happened to be filmed, again, on a day that I felt such shame over being away from my child for so long,” Goggins revealed. “Through this irradiated cowboy, I just got to let it all out in front of all these people.”
What’s Next for Fallout
Fallout Season 2 continues with three remaining episodes, culminating in the season finale on February 4. A third season is already in development. Goggins recently appeared at the 83rd Golden Globes on January 11, marking a notable moment for the acclaimed actor as his work gains continued recognition.
