Underdog Slovakia Eyes Olympic Hockey Upset at Milano

Slovakia’s Seven-Player NHL Roster Embraces Underdog Role at Winter Olympics

Team Slovakia is bracing for a monumental challenge at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, arriving in Italy with just seven NHL players on their roster—a far cry from the deep rosters of favored nations like Canada, USA, Sweden, and Finland.

Despite being overlooked, Slovakia opened its Olympic campaign Wednesday against Finland, determined to prove the underdog narrative wrong. The Slovakia vs Finland matchup kicks off Group B play, with the Slovak squad aiming to replicate the success that earned them bronze at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

A Different Path for Slovakia Hockey

Slovakia’s lean NHL representation doesn’t diminish the team’s determination. Montreal Canadiens forward Juraj Slafkovsky and New Jersey Devils defenseman Simon Nemec headline the roster, backed by depth players committed to playing aggressive, physical hockey.

“Maybe we are the underdog, but I don’t think it’s going to be easy against us,” Calgary Flames forward Martin Pospisil said. “We will try to just play simple, hard, especially my line, we’re going to be heavy. I believe it’s not going to be easy against us.”

On facing Finland hockey specifically, Pospisil was defiant: “We can’t give them too much respect. You need to kind of have a forget-you mindset and then just go there and play.”

The Road Ahead

Slovakia’s Group B schedule is daunting. After the Finland vs Slovakia hockey opener, they face Italy on Feb. 13 and Sweden on Feb. 14. The tournament format sends the three group winners and the best second-place team directly to the quarterfinals, while other teams must compete in single-elimination play for the remaining spots.

This marks the first time NHL players will represent Slovakia at the Olympics since 2014, making this campaign significant for the nation’s ice hockey program.

“It’s going to be the best hockey in the world, so I’m excited for the opportunity to see how I am compared to the best guys in the League,” Nemec said of competing against elite international competition.

The gold medal game is scheduled for Feb. 22, with the tournament serving as a showcase for global hockey talent.
