Trump Says Iran Killings Have Stopped, Executions Halted

Trump Claims Halt to Iran’s Killing of Protesters

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he has been informed Iran has stopped killing protesters and will not carry out threatened executions of detained demonstrators, as human rights groups report the death toll from ongoing nationwide unrest has surpassed 2,500 people over the past 17 days.

“We’ve been told on good authority, and I hope it’s true,” Trump said during an Oval Office event, crediting “very important sources on the other side” for the information. “It was supposed to be a lot of executions today, and the executions won’t take place.”

Context on Iran’s Escalating Unrest

The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) verified 2,571 deaths since protests began on December 28, with an additional 779 deaths under review. The unrest began over economic grievances including rising inflation and currency devaluation but has evolved into broader anti-government demonstrations across Iranian cities.

Government forces, primarily the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its Basij militia, have conducted a sustained security crackdown involving armed trucks with heavy machine guns deployed in residential areas. A near-total communications blackout has severed internet, cell phone networks, SMS messaging, and landlines across the country.

Trump’s Response and Threatened Intervention

The Trump administration has escalated its pressure on Iran’s government. Trump announced a 25% tariff on any country conducting business with Iran and has suggested potential military intervention remains under consideration. “Help is on its way,” Trump wrote on social media Tuesday, prompting Persian-language news channels to broadcast his statement to Iranians unable to access the internet.

Despite Trump’s claim of a halt to killings, residents trapped inside Iran report continued fear and violence. “If Uncle doesn’t do something it’s over. They will just go on killing people until no one’s left,” one Tehran resident told media outlets, referring to Trump as “Uncle” out of concern Iranian intelligence might monitor their communications.

Official Uncertainty Remains

Trump acknowledged uncertainty about the accuracy of his information, stating he has not received verified death toll numbers and will “act accordingly” once receiving “accurate numbers.” When asked whether military action remains off the table, Trump responded carefully: “We’re going to watch and see what the process is.”

The State Department has advised all U.S. citizens to evacuate Iran amid the ongoing crisis.
