Steelers Star T.J. Watt Makes Triumphant Return After Lung Surgery
Pittsburgh Steelers star edge rusher T.J. Watt has completed a remarkable recovery from a partially collapsed lung, returning to action in Week 18 against the Baltimore Ravens and helping the team clinch the AFC North with a thrilling 26-24 victory. The 31-year-old All-Pro made history in his comeback performance, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Julius Peppers as only the second player in NFL history to record 100 or more sacks and nine or more interceptions since sacks became an official statistic in 1982.
Watt underwent surgery on December 10 after sustaining the injury during a dry needling treatment at the Steelers’ training facility. Despite missing three consecutive games, he logged 44 defensive snaps against Baltimore—his lowest snap count in a single contest since Week 3 of 2024—and recorded an interception, two tackles, a quarterback hit, and four pressures in his return.
Road to Recovery and Playoff Implications
“I feel really good,” Watt told reporters following the Ravens victory. “Hats off to the training staff, strength staff for getting me ready to go. Felt great out there tonight.” The defensive coordinator Teryl Austin praised Watt’s conditioning, noting he wasn’t surprised by his performance despite the compressed recovery timeline.
The Ravens contest was a winner-take-all AFC North matchup with major playoff implications. Pittsburgh’s loss to Cleveland in Week 17 had set the stage for the dramatic showdown, which the Steelers won to secure home-field advantage and a playoff berth.
Steelers Aim to End Lengthy Playoff Drought
With Watt now healthy and in the playoffs, Pittsburgh enters their Wild Card game against the Houston Texans on Monday seeking to end a six-game playoff losing streak. In regular-season play this year, Watt recorded 55 tackles, seven sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and two interceptions across 14 games while earning his eighth consecutive Pro Bowl selection.
“I feel great. Really confident with how last week went,” Watt said Saturday ahead of the matchup. “Body feels really good. Extra day is really helpful, obviously for a lot of guys in this locker room. I’m just excited to go out and play in front of Steelers Nation again.”
The Steelers’ defense will rely heavily on Watt’s veteran presence and elite pass-rushing ability as they face a Houston team looking to make its own playoff run. His return represents a significant boost to Pittsburgh’s defensive infrastructure following weeks of uncertainty surrounding his health status and timeline for participation.
