Former NFL Reporter Michele Tafoya Announces Minnesota Senate Campaign
Michele Tafoya, the Emmy-winning NBC sideline reporter known for her prominent role on Sunday Night Football, announced Wednesday that she is running for Minnesota’s open U.S. Senate seat as a Republican, immediately gaining support from the National Republican Senatorial Committee and its chair, Sen. Tim Scott.
The former broadcaster announced her candidacy in a video posted on X, stating: “I am not going to stay on the sidelines any longer. Today I am running for the United States Senate.”[1] The Michele Tafoya Senate bid enters a competitive field for the seat currently held by Democrat Tina Smith, who announced last year she would not seek reelection.
Positioning Herself as a Political Outsider
Tafoya is characterizing her candidacy as bringing an outsider’s perspective to a field dominated by career politicians. With decades of experience in broadcast journalism at KFAN, WCCO, ESPN, and NBC, she brings name recognition and media savvy to the campaign.[2]
“I didn’t come to this decision lightly,” Tafoya said in a statement. “But I’m not willing to stand on the sidelines while Minnesotans are let down by leaders who refuse to take responsibility. This campaign is about putting people first—not politics as usual.”[2]
Campaign Platform and Priorities
Tafoya’s campaign focuses on restoring accountability and rebuilding public trust. She has emphasized addressing issues she says are central to Minnesotans, including government fraud, rising prices for food and housing, law enforcement concerns, and transgender girls in sports.[1]
The NRSC and Sen. Tim Scott have thrown their backing behind her candidacy. Scott called Tafoya “the only candidate with the common-sense leadership Minnesotans are desperately craving.”[3]
A Crowded Field
Other Republican candidates competing for the nomination include former Minnesota Republican Party Chair David Hann. On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan and U.S. Rep. Angie Craig are leading the field of Democratic candidates vying for the seat.[1][2]
