‘Sinners’ Shatters Oscar Records With 16 Nominations
Ryan Coogler’s musical horror film Sinners made Academy Awards history Thursday, earning a record-breaking 16 nominations and surpassing the previous record of 14 held by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997), and La La Land (2016).
The 98th Academy Award nominations announced Thursday morning included major category nods for Sinners in best picture, best director for Coogler, best actor for Michael B. Jordan, best actress in a supporting role for Wunmi Mosaku, and best actor in a supporting role for Delroy Lindo.
Competition Heats Up
Paul Thomas Anderson’s political comedy-thriller One Battle After Another followed with 13 total nominations, including best picture, best director, and acting nods for Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro, and Sean Penn.
The best picture race features 10 nominees this year: Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners, and Train Dreams.
Three other films earned nine nominations each: Guillermo del Toro’s gothic monster film Frankenstein, Josh Safdie’s ping-pong drama Marty Supreme, and Joachim Trier’s family drama Sentimental Value. International features performed particularly well this year, with both The Secret Agent and Sentimental Value earning acting nominations.

Best actor nominees include Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Michael B. Jordan, and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent).
Best actress nominees are Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), and Emma Stone (Bugonia).
Ceremony Details
Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman announced the nominations from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles. The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will take place March 15, 2026, with Conan O’Brien returning as host.
This year marks the debut of casting as an official Academy Awards category, recognizing the work of casting directors across the industry.
