Shelton Tops Ruud to Reach Australian Open Quarters

Ben Shelton Advances to Australian Open Quarterfinals

Ben Shelton showcased his growing versatility at the Australian Open on Monday, defeating Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 to secure a spot in the quarterfinals at Rod Laver Arena. The 23-year-old American’s commanding performance sets up a high-stakes rematch with defending champion Jannik Sinner in the next round.

Shelton’s Dominant Performance

Playing for over two hours and 36 minutes, Shelton combined resilient defence with explosive aggression to overcome Ruud’s early dominance. After dropping the opening set, the eighth seed raised his level significantly, striking a series of eye-catching winners and finishing points at the net with authority. According to match statistics, Shelton won 97 percent of net points during the clash and dropped just three points on serve in the fourth set as he closed out the match.

Ruud had set the tone early with a dominant serving display in the opening set, but costly lapses on serve late in both the second and third sets allowed Shelton to wrestle control of the contest and ultimately secure the victory.

Road to the Quarterfinals

The win marks Shelton’s third quarterfinal appearance in just four trips to Melbourne Park. The American’s success at the Australian Open reflects his deep connection to the tournament, which he describes as one of his favorites on the calendar.

“For me, the atmosphere is everything,” Shelton said in his on-court interview. “I’m definitely a competitor. I’m rowdy on the court and I look forward to rowdy crowds. Down here in Australia, there’s no shortage.” He added that his improvement since his first Australian Open appearance has been primarily mental, noting he is now “a lot more focused” and locked in to his game style.

Sinner Rematch Awaits

Shelton’s next challenge will be a rematch with Jannik Sinner, the two-time defending champion. This quarterfinal encounter represents a second chance for Shelton after the pair met in last year’s semifinal. The American expressed his eagerness for the matchup, emphasizing his desire to improve on aspects of his game that he feels fell short in their previous meeting.

Meanwhile, Casper Ruud will head home to Norway, where he and his wife Maria are expecting a daughter. The Norwegian reached the fourth round at the Australian Open for the first time since 2021.
