Seahawks’ Midseason Trade for Shaheed Pays Off as Free Agency Looms
Rashid Shaheed has become the Seattle Seahawks’ most electrifying playmaker since arriving in a midseason trade with the New Orleans Saints in November 2024. The acquisition, which cost the Seahawks a 2026 fourth- and fifth-round pick, has proven to be one of the franchise’s shrewdest moves, transforming their playoff trajectory as the team pushes deeper into the postseason.
In just 10 games with Seattle, Shaheed has recorded 880 all-purpose yards and scored multiple touchdowns, with his impact most visible on special teams. Since the trade, Shaheed has returned three kickoffs for touchdowns in a Seattle uniform, and the team has won all three of those games. In a critical week 18 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, Shaheed recorded a 58-yard punt return touchdown in the fourth quarter, sparking a remarkable comeback that helped the Seahawks erase a 16-point deficit and claim the top NFC seed.
“He’s Percy Harvin-esque with the goods to alter a game as a returner,” NFL analyst Marc Ross wrote, highlighting Shaheed’s elite playmaking ability. “Lightning in a bottle with the talent to elevate a lot of offenses.”
Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald praised the trade as part of the team’s relentless approach to improvement. “He was someone we were targeting throughout the process,” Macdonald said. “From my perspective and the coaches’ perspective, he’s a player we really respect.”
Free Agency Uncertainty Ahead
Despite his impact, Shaheed faces an uncertain future. The 27-year-old receiver is set to become an unrestricted free agent in mid-March, able to test the open market. However, in a December interview, Shaheed indicated his desire to remain in Seattle.
“I for sure do,” Shaheed told broadcaster Kay Adams when asked about staying with the Seahawks. “I feel like they brought me here for a reason, and that’s to be here for a minute. That’s the goal.”
The question remains whether Seattle will commit to keeping Shaheed long-term or whether another franchise will pursue him with a more lucrative offer and expanded role.
