Scheffler Opens 2026 Campaign at American Express

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler makes his 2026 PGA Tour debut this week in California

Scottie Scheffler is ready to begin his 2026 season at the American Express in La Quinta, California, this week, looking to build momentum after a dominant 2025 campaign that earned him his fourth consecutive Player of the Year award.[1][2]

The world’s top-ranked golfer makes his debut at a tournament where he’s been a prohibitive favorite, armed with renewed focus on his conditioning after an offseason hand injury limited his preparation last year.[2][4] Scheffler’s meticulous approach to returning to peak form sets the stage for what could be another historic year on the PGA Tour.

A Fresh Start After Offseason Focus

Scheffler has spent considerable attention on rebuilding his endurance over the recent offseason, identifying this as a key area to improve after his 2025 campaign. The No. 1 player is among 28 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking competing this week, with eight of the top 13 joining him at the event.[4][5]

“I don’t think about really much other than that. I’m just trying to get ready to come out here and play and compete and do my best,” Scheffler told reporters Tuesday at La Quinta’s PGA West Pete Dye Stadium Course.[1]

Chasing Excellence, Never Perfection

When asked what drives him as the PGA Tour’s most dominant force, Scheffler emphasized his philosophy on continuous improvement rather than achieving perfection. “I have the understanding that I’m never going to get there,” he said. “This is a game that can’t be perfected. But I think that’s what always keeps you coming back.”[1]

His focus on small, granular improvements has proven transformative. In 2025, Scheffler posted an extraordinary season with 20 top-25 finishes in 20 starts and six victories, continuing his reign as golf’s most consistent performer.[2]

American Express as Season Opener

The American Express at PGA West and La Quinta Country Club represents one of a dwindling number of tournaments Scheffler plays regularly but hasn’t won, making it an ideal proving ground to start the year.[2] His track record speaks volumes: in five appearances, he has recorded four top-25 finishes and appears primed for strong early-season performance.

With major championships to pursue—a career Grand Slam remains within reach—and a fifth consecutive Player of the Year award on the horizon, Scheffler begins his quest for continued dominance on the PGA Tour this week in the California desert.
