Houston seeks to extend win streak against Memphis in Western Conference matchup
The Houston Rockets (27-16) host the Memphis Grizzlies (18-25) on Tuesday night, with the Rockets favored by 10.5 points in a Western Conference clash between a team climbing the standings and one struggling through a season marked by injuries on both sides.
Houston enters the matchup fresh off a 111-104 road victory over the Detroit Pistons, a win that came despite the Rockets missing three rotation players including center Stephen Adams, wings Tari Eason and Dorian Finney-Smith. Kevin Durant led the effort with 32 points and seven rebounds in 41 minutes without committing a turnover, while Alperen Sengun added 19 points and Reed Sheppard contributed 18 off the bench.
“Nobody talked about the back-to-back or the fatigue or anything like that,” Rockets coach Ime Udoka said following the victory. “It was about coming out and playing solid basketball and getting that feeling from the previous night out of us.”
The Rockets have won 4 of their last 5 games despite navigating the injury challenges that have defined much of their season. Houston currently sits fourth in the Western Conference, 2.5 games ahead of Memphis in the Southwest Division standings.
Grizzlies Battle Extended Absence List
Memphis arrives in Houston on a more troubling trajectory, having lost three of their last four games. The Grizzlies fell to the New Orleans Pelicans 133-127 on Friday and had a scheduled matchup against the Denver Nuggets postponed Sunday due to inclement weather in Memphis.
The injury crisis extends across Memphis’ frontcourt and backcourt. The Grizzlies are missing frontcourt players Zach Edey and Brandon Clark alongside backcourt contributors Ja Morant, Ty Jerome and Scotty Pippen Jr. The cumulative absences have forced the team into near-perfect basketball just to compete.
Against New Orleans, Memphis committed 19 turnovers and surrendered 18 offensive rebounds, ultimately losing the possession battle that ultimately determined the outcome.
“It is very difficult to win when the other team dominates the possession game,” Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo said. “We know that we are short-handed, especially at the big spots, and we’ve got to come up with the rebounds and be a little bit more disruptive.”
Key Individual Matchups
Durant’s 26.3 points per game leads the Rockets and will be central to Houston’s offensive attack. For Memphis, Jaren Jackson Jr. remains the team’s leading scorer at 18.9 points per game alongside 5.7 rebounds.
Sengun’s contributions across scoring (averaging over 15 points) and playmaking (6.4 assists per game) will be crucial in exploiting a Grizzlies defense weakened by injury losses throughout the season.
Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 a.m. ET at Toyota Center in Houston as the Rockets look to strengthen their position in the playoff race while the Grizzlies attempt to halt a frustrating stretch compounded by health and availability concerns.
