Real Madrid Dismisses Alonso After Super Cup Loss

Real Madrid Parts Ways With Xabi Alonso Following Barcelona Defeat

Real Madrid has officially announced the dismissal of head coach Xabi Alonso after just seven months in charge, ending his tenure following the team’s 3-2 loss to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday in Saudi Arabia. The decision came by mutual agreement between the club and Alonso, marking one of the shortest coaching stints in the club’s storied history.

Alonso managed the team in 34 matches after being appointed in June 2025, a period that saw Real Madrid struggle to maintain consistency despite an initial promising start. The Super Cup defeat in Jeddah served as the final straw for a project that had progressively lost momentum throughout the 2025-26 season.

The Coaching Change and Performance Decline

Real Madrid’s struggles became increasingly evident as the season progressed. The club currently sits fourth in La Liga standings, four points behind Barcelona after holding a five-point advantage in late October. This nine-point swing from their position following a victory over Barcelona to their current standing highlighted the deterioration under Alonso’s management.

Tactical issues plagued the team throughout his tenure. The promised high-pressing defensive approach that characterized Alonso’s tactical blueprint largely failed to materialize consistently, with the squad often reverting to long-ball tactics reminiscent of the previous managerial era. These shortcomings became particularly glaring in the Super Cup final, where Madrid struggled to control possession and build from the back.

Dressing Room Tensions and Player Conflicts

Beyond tactical struggles, internal friction contributed to Alonso’s downfall. Tensions emerged between the coach and star forward Vinícius Jr., particularly following a substitution decision during the Clásico at the Bernabéu that saw the Brazilian player visibly express his disagreement on the pitch. These interpersonal challenges extended beyond one player, creating divisions within the squad that ultimately proved untenable.

Real Madrid’s statement acknowledged Alonso’s legendary status as a former player and midfielder who made 236 appearances for Los Blancos during his playing career. “Xabi Alonso will always carry the affection and admiration of all Madridistas because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home,” the club said.

Álvaro Arbeloa Named as Interim Replacement

Real Madrid moved swiftly to name a successor, appointing Álvaro Arbeloa as interim head coach. The 42-year-old former defender has been serving as manager of Real Madrid’s B team and brings familiarity with the club’s structure and philosophy. Like Alonso, Arbeloa is a Real Madrid legend, having made 316 appearances for the club and sharing considerable history with his predecessor, including stints together at Liverpool and in the Spanish national team.

Arbeloa faces an immediate challenge in stabilizing the team and mounting a title challenge in La Liga. The club’s statement expressed gratitude to Alonso and his coaching staff for their efforts during the seven-month period.

Historical Context

While Alonso’s seven-month tenure was remarkably brief, it was not the shortest in Real Madrid history. José Antonio Camacho holds that distinction, having spent just 22 days as head coach in 1998 without overseeing any matches before resigning over disagreements with club hierarchy. Other notably short tenures include Julen Lopetegui’s 14-game spell in 2018-19 and Santiago Solari’s 32-game stint in 2018-19.
