No. 5 Purdue Basketball Faces Ranked Iowa in Big Ten Showdown

No. 5 Purdue Basketball Defeats No. 23 Iowa in Big Ten Matchup

No. 5 Purdue and No. 23 Iowa met Wednesday night in a high-stakes Big Ten conference game inside Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana, with the Boilermakers looking to extend their winning streak against the Hawkeyes.

Purdue basketball entered the contest undefeated at home this season with a 9-1 record inside Mackey Arena and an impressive 15-1 overall mark with a perfect 5-0 Big Ten conference record. The Boilermakers were riding a seven-game winning streak heading into the matchup.

Iowa men’s basketball arrived in West Lafayette desperate for a road victory after consecutive conference losses to Minnesota and Illinois. The Hawkeyes dropped their previous home game 75-69 to then-No. 16 Illinois on Sunday, closing a 18-point deficit late in the second half before ultimately falling short.

A Challenging Road Environment

The matchup represented Iowa’s third top-seven ranked opponent contest on the road this season. The Hawkeyes have struggled at Mackey Arena historically, dropping their last six games there and not recording a road victory in the series since 2016.

Senior Tavion Banks led Iowa’s effort in their previous outing, finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists despite battling the flu. Freshman Tate Sage contributed 13 points in a season-high 29 minutes.

Purdue’s Dominant Season

Purdue basketball has established itself as a Big Ten powerhouse this season, securing notable nonconference victories over Alabama, Texas Tech, Marquette and Auburn. The Boilermakers’ only blemish came from an 81-58 home loss to Iowa State on December 6.

The game marked the 177th all-time meeting between the programs, with Purdue leading the series 98-78. The Boilermakers have won 10 of the last 12 meetings dating back to the 2017-18 season, including four straight victories.

The contest aired on BTN with kickoff at 5:30 p.m. Central Time from West Lafayette. Fans could also follow live statistics and radio coverage through the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Iowa was seeking to snap a six-game road losing streak at Mackey Arena, with their most recent victory in the series coming in the 2016 Big Ten Tournament championship game—a 75-66 triumph in Indianapolis.
