Penn State hockey star Gavin McKenna, the consensus No. 1 overall pick for the 2026 NHL draft, faces felony aggravated assault charges following an alleged altercation in downtown State College on January 31.
The 18-year-old Canadian forward was charged with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault, and summary offenses for disorderly conduct and harassment. The incident occurred at 10:35 p.m. near the 100 block of South Pugh Street, according to State College police records.

The altercation allegedly took place after Penn State’s outdoor hockey game at Beaver Stadium, where McKenna scored in the second period as the Nittany Lions lost 5-4 in overtime to Michigan State. According to reports, the team had gathered at a downtown bar with friends and family following the historic game.
During the incident, McKenna allegedly assaulted an unidentified individual, leaving the victim with a broken jaw. The State College Police Department filed the charges against McKenna.
