Bills Owner, GM Address Sean McDermott’s Ouster Following Broncos Loss
Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula and general manager/newly promoted president Brandon Beane broke their silence on the firing of longtime head coach Sean McDermott during a Wednesday afternoon press conference, confirming the decision was driven by the team’s failure to advance past the AFC Divisional Round.
Pegula pointed to Saturday’s 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos as the catalyst for the coaching change, stating the Bills had hit “the proverbial playoff wall” in a season that many viewed as their clearest path to the Super Bowl following Kansas City’s early playoff exit.
Accountability and Future Direction
Beane, whose promotion was announced alongside McDermott’s dismissal, assumed responsibility for the franchise’s inability to reach the Super Bowl during reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen‘s prime years. “We have a MVP QB who just finished his 8th season here and we’ve got to help him get to the Super Bowl,” Beane told reporters. “We have to get it over the top, and that starts with finding the right head coach.”
The Bills’ coaching search is already underway, with candidates including former offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn among those under consideration for the position vacated by McDermott’s departure.
McDermott’s Legacy and Coaching Staff Controversy
McDermott’s nine-year tenure produced consistent playoff appearances—eight in nine seasons—and five consecutive AFC East Division titles from 2019 to 2024. However, the organization’s inability to advance beyond divisional playoff rounds proved fatal to his job security.
During the press conference, Pegula made a striking revelation, claiming that the coaching staff had pressured Beane into drafting wide receiver Keon Coleman, whose two-year NFL career has failed to meet expectations. “The coaching staff pushed for Keon. He was not Brandon’s next choice,” Pegula said, effectively deflecting blame for a disappointing personnel decision.
Looking Forward
The Buffalo Bills’ front office search for McDermott’s replacement comes as the organization attempts to maximize the remaining years of Allen’s contract and finally end a decades-long Super Bowl drought. The organization will continue interviewing candidates over the coming days as it works to identify the right leadership to guide the franchise forward.
