Orioles Acquire Blaze Alexander in Diamondbacks Trade

Orioles Add Infield Depth With Trade for Blaze Alexander

The Baltimore Orioles bolstered their infield roster Thursday by acquiring infielder Blaze Alexander from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-hander Kade Strowd and two minor league prospects, according to MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert.

The 26-year-old Alexander, who ranked as Arizona’s No. 20 prospect as recently as 2024, provides Baltimore with defensive versatility across the diamond. He spent most of his time at third base with the D-backs before being bumped down the depth chart following Arizona’s acquisition of 10-time Gold Glover Nolan Arenado.

Alexander’s Playing Profile

Alexander appeared in 74 games for Arizona last season, recording a .706 OPS with seven home runs, 28 RBIs and four stolen bases. Over two major league seasons, he has batted .237/.322/.366 in 135 games, showcasing a weak offensive profile offset by superior defensive contributions.

The infielder ranked in the 70th percentile of fielders in 2025 with +1 outs above average (OAA) and in the 86th percentile for sprint speed at 28.8 feet per second—approaching elite-level quickness metrics.

Role With the Orioles

Baltimore has established starters around the infield with Jackson Holliday at second base, Gunnar Henderson at shortstop and Jordan Westburg at third base. Alexander will serve primarily as a versatile backup capable of filling in at all three positions, adding depth to an established roster.

The trade effectively ends speculation about a potential reunion with former Orioles infielder Ramón Urías.

What Arizona Receives

Right-hander Kade Strowd, 28, made an impression during the latter portion of the 2025 season with Baltimore. The relief pitcher posted a 1.71 ERA and 1.101 WHIP over 25 appearances in his major league debut. The D-backs also received minor league infielder José Mejía and pitcher Wellington Aracena in the deal.

The move addresses Arizona’s infield logjam following the Nolan Arenado acquisition and keeps Ketel Marte off the trade market.
