Oklahoma Stuns No. 15 Vanderbilt 92-91, Ends 9-Game Skid

Sooners Snap Losing Streak with Dramatic Road Victory

Oklahoma basketball pulled off a stunning road upset Saturday, defeating No. 15 Vanderbilt 92-91 in Nashville to end a nine-game losing streak. The victory marked the Sooners’ first road win against an AP top-15 opponent since February 2021 and demonstrated resilience despite nearly surrendering a 21-point second-half lead.

Xzayvier Brown delivered the decisive plays, scoring 14 of his 20 points in the second half and clinching the victory with two clutch free throws with 3.4 seconds remaining. Nijel Pack contributed 17 points as Oklahoma shot 53.4% from the field.

The Sooners (12-12, 2-9 SEC) controlled much of the contest, building their largest lead at 82-63 with 3:38 remaining. However, Vanderbilt basketball mounted a furious comeback, with Tyler Tanner leading the charge with a game-high 37 points. Tyler Nickel added 18 points for the Commodores (19-4, 6-4), including a 3-pointer with 90 seconds left that cut Oklahoma’s advantage to 10.

A Comeback That Fell Short

Despite Vanderbilt’s second-half surge, Oklahoma basketball never trailed throughout the contest—a significant statistical achievement for a road victory against a ranked opponent. The Sooners’ advantage at halftime was 48-34, their largest first-half lead in SEC play this season.

Vanderbilt’s comeback attempts were hampered by turnovers and missed opportunities. AK Okereke’s 4-point play with 49 seconds left brought the Commodores within two possessions, but Brown’s free throws secured the victory. Tanner banked in a 30-footer with 5.2 seconds left and another 3-pointer at the final buzzer, accounting for the final one-point margin.

Significance of the Win

The victory represents a turning point for Oklahoma after struggling against SEC competition. The Sooners’ defensive struggles, which had allowed 79 or more points in their previous eight games, showed signs of improvement. The team’s offense, led by Brown’s scoring consistency, proved decisive in the clutch moments.

Next games: Oklahoma hosts Georgia on Saturday, while Vanderbilt travels to Auburn on Tuesday night.
