NHL Stars Return to Olympic Ice at Milano Cortina

2026 Winter Olympics Men’s Hockey Tournament Kicks Off With Elite International Competition

The 2026 Winter Olympics men’s hockey tournament is underway in Milano Cortina, Italy, marking the first time the International Olympic Committee has featured NHL players competing on the Olympic stage since the 2014 Sochi Games. The competition runs through February 22 and promises to showcase world-class talent from 12 elite national teams.

Tournament Format and Schedule

The men’s hockey tournament follows a familiar structure with all 12 teams divided into three groups of four. Each team plays three preliminary games within their group, followed by a single-elimination playoff format that determines medal winners. Games are being held at two venues in the Milan cluster: the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena and the Rho Ice Hockey Arena.

The preliminary round began February 11 with Slovakia facing Finland, and Team USA opened its campaign on February 12 against Latvia. The American squad advanced through preliminary play with commanding victories: defeating Latvia 5-1, Denmark 6-3, and Germany 5-1. The quarterfinals commenced February 18, with the USA facing Sweden.

International Competition and Roster Highlights

The tournament features powerhouse programs including Canada, Finland, Sweden, Czechia, and other strong hockey nations. According to preliminary roster announcements, 61 of the 72 named players hold contracts with NHL teams. The New Jersey Devils lead all organizations with six players represented, including Nico Hischier and Timo Meier of Switzerland. The Florida Panthers contribute five players, including Aleksander Barkov of Finland and Matthew Tkachuk representing the United States.

Key Dates Ahead

The Olympic hockey schedule culminates with semifinals on February 20, the bronze medal game on February 21, and the gold medal game on February 22. All games are broadcast live in the United States, providing fans unprecedented access to elite international competition featuring their favorite NHL stars.

The return of professional players to Olympic hockey elevates the quality of play and draws increased viewership from American audiences eager to watch top-tier talent compete for national pride on the international stage.
