Nets Part Ways With Cam Thomas in Free Agency Move

Nets Release Cam Thomas to Free Agency

The Brooklyn Nets have waived guard Cam Thomas, ending a contentious partnership and allowing the scoring threat to enter unrestricted free agency, sources told ESPN. The decision comes as the relationship between Thomas and the franchise deteriorated over the season.

The move grants Thomas immediate freedom to pursue a contract with any NBA contender without the Nets retaining matching rights. “Super excited ready to actually help and contribute to another team,” Thomas told ESPN Andscape’s Marc Spears. “My next team is getting elite scoring, good playmaking and a good combo guard.”

Season Performance and Recent Tensions

Thomas has averaged 15.6 points across 24 games this season, starting in eight of those contests, after missing 20 games due to a left hamstring strain. His production comes as questions about his fit with Brooklyn intensified.

Friction surfaced publicly on January 23 when Thomas was pulled from a game against the Celtics for refusing to shoot when the shot clock was running down, preferring instead to pass. The incident highlighted growing tensions between Thomas and the organization.

Contract History and Future Outlook

Thomas accepted a $5.9 million qualifying offer from the Nets over the summer after contract negotiations stalled. Last season, he averaged 24 points and 3.8 assists in 25 games, though similar hamstring issues plagued that stretch as well.

Now positioned as an unrestricted free agent, Thomas has the opportunity to join a playoff contender as either a bench scorer or potential starter. His ability to produce offensive firepower makes him a sought-after addition as teams approach the trade deadline and buyout market.
