Offensive Coordinator Brings Pitt Pedigree to Hoosiers Success
Mike Shanahan, the Indiana Hoosiers’ offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach, has become a driving force behind the program’s offensive resurgence since joining head coach Curt Cignetti in 2023. The former Pittsburgh standout has transformed the Hoosiers’ receiving corps and overall offensive strategy, helping establish Indiana as a formidable force in college football.
From Player to Coach: A Pitt Legacy
Shanahan graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2012 after an accomplished four-year career as a wide receiver. His 159 receptions and 2,276 receiving yards both rank in the top 10 in school history. A two-time team captain, Shanahan earned second-team All-Big East honors in his senior season with 62 receptions for 983 yards and six touchdowns, helping the Panthers reach the BBVA Compass Bowl. He was a four-time All-Big East Academic Team selection and received Pitt’s Senior of Distinction Award.
After his playing career, Shanahan spent time on NFL preseason rosters with the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as well as stints in the Canadian Football League with the Montreal Alouettes before transitioning fully into coaching.
Building Success Across Multiple Programs
Shanahan’s coaching journey has been marked by consistent success in developing elite receiving talent. He began his coaching career at Pittsburgh in 2014 as a volunteer assistant before becoming a graduate assistant in 2015, working closely with future NFL prospect Tyler Boyd during the Panthers’ 8-5 2015 season.
Following his time at Pitt, Shanahan held wide receivers coaching positions at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Elon University, and James Madison University, often working under Curt Cignetti. At Elon in 2017, he guided Kortez Weeks to all-conference and Freshman All-America honors, while the Phoenix receivers averaged 205.5 receiving yards per game—a 50-yard improvement from the previous season. At James Madison, Shanahan helped set program records in 2021 with 3,868 passing yards and 43 passing touchdowns while coaching standout receiver Brandon Polk to second-team All-CAA honors.
Indiana’s Offensive Revolution
Since joining Mike Shanahan Indiana in 2023 alongside Cignetti, the coordinator has implemented an offensive system that has yielded impressive results. In 2024, the Hoosiers tied the program’s single-season record with 37 rushing touchdowns and set the program’s second-most passing touchdowns in a season with 33. Quarterback Kurtis Rourke set a program single-season mark with 29 passing touchdowns under Shanahan’s guidance.
The balanced offensive approach has made Indiana a competitive contender in the Big Ten, showcasing Shanahan’s ability to adapt and innovate while maintaining the fundamental principles of sound football he learned throughout his career.
