Mets sign All-Star Bo Bichette to $126M, three-year contract
The New York Mets have agreed to a three-year, $126 million contract with free agent infielder Bo Bichette, marking a significant move to bolster their roster after missing out on Kyle Tucker.[1][2] The deal includes opt-outs after each of the first two seasons and represents the Mets’ aggressive pivot in free agency.[5]
Bichette, 28, is coming off a strong rebound season with the Toronto Blue Jays, hitting .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs across 139 games. His 181 hits ranked second in MLB, just four shy of the league lead.[2][3] The shortstop also delivered a memorable performance in October, hitting .348 with a three-run homer in Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers despite playing through a knee injury sustained late in the regular season.[1][3]
“This is still a very top-heavy Mets lineup, but the group of Lindor-Bichette-Soto could be as good as any trio in MLB in 2026,” according to reports on the new roster configuration.[1] Bichette will move to third base after Francisco Lindor remains entrenched at shortstop, allowing the Mets to keep both elite hitters in their lineup.[1]
A bounce-back move for the All-Star infielder
The move comes after a tumultuous 2024 for Bichette, who was limited to just 81 games due to calf issues and a broken finger, posting a disappointing .225 average.[1] However, his 2025 campaign proved his performance struggles were behind him. He was ranked among the top 14 percent of hitters with a 14.5 percent strikeout rate and showed exceptional plate discipline, finishing 99th percentile in expected batting average with a .307 mark.[2]
The Philadelphia Phillies had offered Bichette “much more guaranteed money over more years” before he chose the Mets, according to reports.[1] Toronto made Bichette a $22.025 million qualifying offer, which he declined, earning the Blue Jays a 2026 Draft pick after the fourth round as compensation.[2][4]
Strengthening the New York Mets’ 2026 roster
The Mets’ projected 2026 lineup now features a formidable core alongside Bichette. Francisco Lindor will man shortstop, Juan Soto takes the right field spot, and Jorge Polanco moves to first base, with Marcus Semien at second.[1] Additional pieces like Brett Baty at DH and Francisco Alvarez behind the plate round out a roster aimed at competing in the National League East.
Per Spotrac, the addition of Bichette’s $42 million average annual salary brings the Mets’ total payroll to $358 million heading into 2026, the second-most expensive roster in Major League Baseball.[1] The aggressive spending reflects the Mets’ determination to contend after the roster overhaul that began with Juan Soto’s arrival.
Bichette’s track record and defensive transition
Over seven MLB seasons since debuting in 2019, Bichette has compiled a .294 career average with 904 hits, 111 home runs, 437 RBIs, and 60 stolen bases.[3] A two-time All-Star (2021, 2023), he led the AL in hits twice early in his career but faced adversity with injuries in recent years before rebounding spectacularly in 2025.[3]
While his defensive metrics as a shortstop have been below-average in recent seasons, Bichette showed promise at second base during the World Series, handling the position well despite his compromised knee mobility.[2] The move to third base represents an adjustment that could maximize his offensive contributions while minimizing defensive pressure as the Mets aim to compete for a division title.
