Mariners on Verge of Major Trade for All-Star Donovan

Seattle Mariners Finalizing Three-Team Deal for Cardinals Star

The Seattle Mariners are closing in on a significant trade to acquire All-Star infielder Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals in a three-team transaction also involving the Tampa Bay Rays, according to multiple reports on Monday. While the involved clubs have not yet officially confirmed the deal, ESPN and The Athletic reported the teams are actively finalizing the arrangement.

The blockbuster acquisition would give the Seattle Mariners a versatile infielder coming off his best professional season. The 28-year-old Donovan established career highs in 2025 with a .287 batting average, .422 slugging percentage, and 32 doubles while collecting 10 home runs and 50 RBIs. Donovan also earned his first career All-Star selection last season.

A Veteran Piece for Seattle’s Contention Window

For the Mariners, who reached the American League Championship Series last season, Donovan represents another impact acquisition aimed at strengthening their playoff roster. The versatile player can man multiple positions, with second base as his primary position, while also capable of playing first, third, left field, and limited shortstop duties.

Seattle’s manager Dan Wilson would benefit from Donovan’s positional flexibility, allowing the team to adjust lineups based on matchups and manage rest days. The St. Louis Cardinals have deployed him extensively at second base, left field, and shortstop in recent seasons, particularly after elbow surgery in 2023.

Cardinals Continue Rebuild Strategy

The potential trade of Brendan Donovan continues the St. Louis Cardinals’ aggressive offseason overhaul under new president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom. Earlier this offseason, the Cardinals shipped away right-hander Sonny Gray, first baseman Willson Contreras, and veteran third baseman Nolan Arenado as part of their commitment to a comprehensive rebuild.

Donovan’s resume includes a Gold Glove Award in his 2022 rookie season and a Gold Glove finalist selection in 2024. The 28-year-old brings both defensive prowess and offensive consistency to any roster, having maintained a career OPS+ of 117 across four MLB seasons.

No Official Confirmation Yet

The specifics of what each team would receive in the three-team transaction remain unconfirmed as negotiations continue. Donovan is eligible for arbitration and recently agreed to a $5.8 million salary for the 2026 season, ensuring he remains under team control through 2027.

Spring training begins in approximately one week, and industry sources indicate resolution on Donovan’s status may come before that date. The Mariners have shown strong interest in bolstering their infield ahead of 2026, making the pursuit of the talented Seattle-bound All-Star a natural fit for the contending organization.
