Lakers Star Luka Shaken But Continues After Court Slip in First Quarter
NBA leading scorer Luka Doncic suffered a lower left leg injury Wednesday after slipping on Cleveland’s court during the first quarter of the Lakers-Cavaliers matchup, but the All-Star guard returned to action and finished the opening half with 15 points.
The incident occurred with 7:58 remaining in the first quarter when Doncic, attempting a fadeaway three-pointer, lost his footing and hopped backward on one leg before slipping off the edge of the elevated court. He immediately grabbed his lower left leg and was unable to stand without assistance. Lakers trainers helped him to his feet during a timeout, and he limped toward the locker room, putting minimal weight on the injured leg.
Despite the scary moment, Doncic returned with just 1:32 left in the opening quarter. After a slow start—finishing one-of-six from the field in early second-quarter action—he found his rhythm, making five of his next six shots, including a three-pointer, while adding five assists and three rebounds in the first half.
The Court Hazard Factor
The injury raised concerns about Cleveland’s unique arena setup, where the Quicken Loans Arena’s court is raised above the floor to accommodate an NHL ice hockey rink underneath. It remains the only arena in the NBA with this distinctive design.
The slip echoed a troubling precedent from 2023, when Miami Heat guard Dru Smith suffered a severe anterior cruciate ligament sprain after slipping off the same court during a previous Lakers visit to Cleveland.
Lakers’ Injury Timeline
The Doncic injury scare comes as Los Angeles manages its health during an eight-game road trip extending through February 3. Guard Austin Reaves is expected to return from a calf injury by the end of the trip, marking another positive development for the team.
At the time of the injury, the Cavaliers led the Lakers 57-55, with the game still in its early stages. Doncic, who is averaging 33.8 points this season, will be closely monitored going forward.
