Dan Lanning Faces Biggest Test Yet as Oregon Football Coach
The Oregon football coach is about to face his greatest challenge yet. Dan Lanning will lead the Ducks against No. 1-ranked Indiana in Friday night’s Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, a College Football Playoff semifinal that will determine who advances to the championship game. Indiana enters the contest undefeated at 14-0, while Oregon comes in at 13-1 after its historic 2024 season.
This is a rematch of an earlier October meeting that Indiana won 30-20 in Eugene. That loss still weighs on Lanning and his team as they prepare for a neutral-site showdown at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Historic Season for Oregon Under Lanning’s Leadership
Lanning has transformed Oregon football in just four seasons. The Ducks went undefeated in the 2024 regular season, posting a 12-0 record, and captured the Big Ten Championship in their first year in the conference. Oregon earned the No. 1 seed in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff, matching the program record with 13 wins.
Since taking over before the 2022 season, Lanning has compiled a 35-6 overall record with double-digit wins in each of his first three seasons. His 36 wins rank third among all FBS head coaches in that span, and he recently signed a contract extension through the 2030 season.
Keys to Victory Against Indiana’s Powerhouse Hoosiers
In his assessment of the upcoming matchup, Lanning emphasized the importance of ball security and winning at the line of scrimmage. “The team that can win the line of scrimmage, that’s a big, big piece of this game,” Lanning said. Oregon’s earlier loss to Indiana was partly attributed to turnovers that the Ducks committed.
Indiana’s offense is led by quarterback Fernando Mendoza, a Heisman Trophy finalist and potential top-10 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Hoosiers dominated Alabama 38-3 in their playoff quarterfinal, showcasing why they earned the top seed. Despite being ranked higher, Mendoza said Indiana maintains an underdog mentality heading into Friday’s showdown.
Indiana is a 3.5-point favorite in the contest. Should Oregon win, the Ducks would advance to face Miami in the College Football Playoff Championship Game.
