Juszczyk’s Revolutionary Role Powers 49ers Deep Into Playoffs

Pro Bowl Fullback Earns All-Pro Honors for Groundbreaking Contributions

Kyle Juszczyk has cemented his place as one of the NFL’s most valuable offensive weapons, earning 2026 All-Pro honors after a season where he led all NFL fullbacks in snaps and redefined the position’s role in modern football. The San Francisco 49ers’ 10-time Pro Bowl fullback continues to be the foundation of Kyle Shanahan’s innovative offensive scheme, helping propel the team through the playoff race.

Juszczyk, affectionately known as “Juice,” logged 510 snaps—just under 30 per game—during the regular season, far exceeding the contributions of traditional fullbacks around the league. More remarkably, he operated in motion on 235 snaps, the most of any skill position player in the NFL, creating constant defensive confusion for opponents.

The Blueprint: How Juszczyk Changes the Game

Unlike conventional fullbacks who primarily block in-line, Juszczyk’s expanded role forces defensive coordinators across the league to adjust their entire game plans. The 49ers deployed him in 21 and 22 personnel packages—configurations featuring two running backs and either one or two tight ends—on roughly 45 percent of their offensive snaps, the highest rate in football.

“Juice” lines up everywhere: directly in front of running back Christian McCaffrey, motioning across the formation as a decoy, or positioned in wing alignments that create run-action possibilities. His presence alone commands defensive attention, often drawing safeties out of position and creating mismatches receivers exploit downfield. During a Week 17 victory against Chicago, Juszczyk’s wing alignment aligned on consecutive McCaffrey carries, leading to a 15-yard gain followed by a five-yard touchdown run.

The 49ers’ offense averaged 26 points per game during the regular season, climbing to 31 points when starting quarterback Brock Purdy returned in Week 11 from an eight-game absence due to a toe injury. With Juszczyk’s contributions in the 22 personnel grouping, San Francisco recorded an NFL-most six touchdowns on 32 pass plays from that personnel set alone.

A Rare Fullback Legacy

Few NFL teams lean heavily on the fullback position anymore. The Ravens, Dolphins, and Bills employ similar strategies, but for the 49ers, Juszczyk remains central to their identity and offensive blueprint. Now in his ninth season with San Francisco, Juszczyk was recently re-signed to a two-year deal through 2026, ensuring his continued role in Shanahan’s scheme during the franchise’s championship window.

Though he carries the ball sparingly—just two carries for negative-3 yards—and averages fewer than two catches per game, Juszczyk’s impact transcends traditional statistical categories. He’s the engine that keeps Shanahan’s system operating, forcing opposing defensive coordinators into perpetual guesswork.

With Pro Bowl starter honors alongside George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey, Juszczyk’s 2026 All-Pro selection validates what the 49ers have long known: “Juice” isn’t just a fullback—he’s a revolutionary threat who’s fundamentally reshaped how the position influences modern football strategy.
