Knicks Acquire Jose Alvarado in Trade Deadline Deal

Knicks Bring Brooklyn Native Home in Pelicans Trade

The New York Knicks acquired point guard Jose Alvarado from the New Orleans Pelicans ahead of the NBA trade deadline, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal sends Dalen Terry, two second-round draft picks, and cash considerations to New Orleans.

Alvarado, 27, returns to his native Brooklyn after carving out a reputation as one of the NBA’s most energetic defenders. Known as “Grand Theft Alvarado” for his uncanny ability to strip inbound passes, the diminutive point guard has become a fixture in New Orleans’ backcourt since going undrafted in 2021.

A Perfect Homecoming Story

The Jose Alvarado trade represents more than a simple roster move—it’s a homecoming for the Christ The King alum who won TimesLedger Player of the Year in high school. Growing up in Queens, Alvarado has long been connected to New York basketball, and his arrival at Madison Square Garden figures to create immediate fan appeal.

“There has never been a more obvious fan favorite in NBA history than Jose Alvarado on the Knicks,” according to Daily Knicks analysis of the transaction. His relentless playing style and blue-collar approach should resonate with MSG crowds eager for a spark in the backcourt.

What Alvarado Brings to New York

This season, Alvarado is averaging 7.9 points and just under one steal per game while maintaining a 36-37 percent three-point shooting percentage. While his scoring production remains modest, his defensive intensity and willingness to compete every possession have made him invaluable to his previous team.

The Knicks, currently riding an eight-game winning streak, view Alvarado as a complementary piece alongside primary ball-handler Jalen Brunson. His versatility on the defensive end and scrappy approach should provide depth to a playoff-contending roster.

Contract Details

Alvarado signed an extension with New Orleans last season and holds a player option worth $4.5 million for next season, giving him flexibility in his contract situation.

Meanwhile, Terry, 23, heads to the Pelicans on an expiring deal and will become a free agent this summer. The Kansas City product was acquired by New York just weeks earlier from the Chicago Bulls in a separate transaction.
