Jill Biden’s Ex-Husband Charged in Wife’s Death

Former First Lady’s Ex-Husband Faces First-Degree Murder Charge

Bill Stevenson, the ex-husband of First Lady Jill Biden, has been formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his current wife, Linda Stevenson. The 64-year-old was found unresponsive in the couple’s Wilmington, Delaware home on December 28, 2025, following a reported domestic dispute.

Police responded to the Oak Hill neighborhood residence at approximately 11:16 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute. Officers discovered Linda Stevenson in the living room and immediately administered life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Forensic teams worked throughout the night to gather evidence from the home.

Details of the Investigation

Authorities from the New Castle County Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit are leading the ongoing inquiry. The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit is reviewing 911 audio logs and digital evidence to establish a clear timeline of events. According to preliminary investigation findings, there were no signs of forced entry or outside intrusion at the property.

The charging documents suggest the confrontation turned fatal quickly. While a specific motive has not been publicly released, the domestic nature of the dispute has become central to the prosecution’s case. Stevenson remains in custody as he awaits his initial court appearance.

Connection to Jill Biden

Bill Stevenson, 76, married Jill Biden in 1970 while she was in college. The couple remained married until their divorce was finalized in May 1975. In recent years, Stevenson had re-emerged in the public eye, occasionally providing interviews regarding his past relationship with the current First Lady. However, the current legal proceedings focus entirely on his marriage to Linda and the circumstances surrounding her death.

An autopsy by the Delaware Division of Forensic Science is scheduled to determine the official cause and manner of death. Police have emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that all information released to date is preliminary pending forensic analysis and additional witness interviews.
