Jennette McCurdy Releases Raw Debut Novel ‘Half His Age’

Jennette McCurdy, the former Nickelodeon star behind the bestselling memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died, has released her debut novel Half His Age today, introducing readers to a provocative exploration of power, desire, and coming of age in contemporary America.

The 33-year-old author’s fictional debut follows Waldo, a 17-year-old girl in Anchorage, Alaska, whose life becomes consumed by an obsession with her middle-aged English teacher. The novel tackles their age-gap relationship through raw, explicit prose that McCurdy has made her signature style—unvarnished and unflinching in its examination of complex emotional territory.

A Personal Connection to Complex Themes

McCurdy has been open about the personal underpinnings of the work. In her memoir, she detailed her own experience with a relationship when she was a naive 18-year-old involving a crew member significantly older than her. The author has described Half His Age as a means of processing unresolved emotions from that period of her life.

“Writing, for me, is a means of finding closure where maybe there wasn’t in my own life,” McCurdy explained regarding the novel’s creation. “It’s a way of exploring things that I maybe haven’t fully processed myself.”

The idea for the novel first took shape when McCurdy was 24, traveling solo in Japan. Years later, following the critical and commercial success of her memoir, she felt compelled to bring Waldo’s voice to life on the page.

Themes of Power and Female Rage

The novel explores intersecting themes including power dynamics, lust, shame, and female rage, examining how vulnerability and desire can intersect in complicated ways. McCurdy’s protagonist is portrayed with nuance—simultaneously naive and perceptive, fascinating yet frustrating to readers who may find themselves questioning their own sympathies.

The work also serves as broader social commentary on consumerism, class anxiety, suburban constraints, and the loneliness epidemic affecting young people today.

Expanding Into Film and Television

McCurdy’s literary success comes as her media presence continues to expand. She has already written a script for a film adaptation of Half His Age, which she plans to direct if circumstances allow. Additionally, an Apple TV+ series loosely inspired by her memoir is in development, starring Jennifer Aniston, with McCurdy serving as creator, writer, executive producer, director, and showrunner.

The author is currently working on her next book project, marking a significant evolution for someone who spent much of her early career in front of cameras rather than at the writing desk.
