Oregon Running Back Jay Harris Clears to Play in Peach Bowl Despite Transfer Portal Move

Unprecedented Decision Gives Ducks Boost Against No. 1 Indiana

Oregon running back Jay Harris will suit up for the College Football Playoff Semifinal against No. 1 Indiana on Friday, despite entering the transfer portal earlier this week—an unprecedented move under coach Dan Lanning that signals the realities of modern college football recruitment.

Lanning confirmed Harris’ availability during a joint press conference with Indiana coach Curt Cignetti ahead of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The decision marks the first time the Oregon coach has allowed a portal player to participate in a postseason game during his tenure.

Harris Steps Into Critical Role

Harris’ availability becomes crucial with Oregon’s running back depth severely depleted. Freshman sensation Jordon Davison, the team’s second-leading rusher with 667 yards and 15 touchdowns, will miss the ducks game with a reported collarbone injury and is likely out for the national championship game if Oregon advances.

Additionally, Oregon running backs Makhi Hughes and Jayden Limar also entered the transfer portal, leaving Noah Whittington and Dierre Hill Jr. as the only initially healthy options at the position.

Harris has recorded 26 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown in eight games this season. Over two seasons at Oregon, the power back has totaled 36 carries for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

Why This Matters

Lanning framed the unconventional decision as part of the evolving landscape of college football, noting that coaches must be “recruiting every single day” given the transfer portal’s expanded role. Harris practiced with the team on Monday when his portal intentions became public.

Prior to his time at Oregon, Harris established himself as a force at Division II Northwest Missouri State, earning AP All-American honors as a sophomore after recording 1,381 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns across 20 games with the Bearcats.

Oregon enters Friday’s matchup as a 3.5-point underdog. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. PT on ESPN.
