Charlotte and Atlanta meet in season-defining matchup before eight-day hiatus
The Charlotte Hornets and Atlanta Hawks concluded their pre-All-Star break schedule Wednesday night in a game carrying significant playoff race implications, with both Southeast Division rivals separated by just one game in the standings.
The Hornets entered the matchup at 25-29 in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, while the Hawks stood at 26-29 in ninth place. The tight positioning underscored how critical remaining games would become as both teams vie for postseason positioning in the second half of the season.
Hornets Seek to Stabilize After Streak Ends
Charlotte came into the contest looking to refocus after their nine-game winning streak ended in Monday’s contentious loss to the Detroit Pistons. The game devolved into a physical affair, resulting in multiple ejections including Hornets forward Miles Bridges and center Moussa Diabate.
Coach Charles Lee praised his team’s competitiveness despite the defeat. “I just love everything they brought from a competitive spirit,” Lee said following the Detroit loss. The potential for suspensions loomed as a roster management concern heading into the brief All-Star break.
Bridges has been instrumental in the Hornets’ recent success, scoring a team-high 26 points in a 126-119 victory over Atlanta on February 7. Rookie Kon Knueppel contributed 23 points in that same matchup, continuing his strong stretch against the Hawks this season.
Hawks Grapple with Defensive Inconsistency
Atlanta faced its own challenges after losing consecutive games, including a lopsided 138-116 defeat at Minnesota on Monday night. The Hawks surrendered 81 points in the first half to the Timberwolves, highlighting persistent defensive vulnerabilities.
Coach Quin Snyder acknowledged the adjustment period with his revamped roster. “We’re not used to those lineups yet,” Snyder explained. “We’re still trying to figure out some of those guys and those combinations.” The Hawks have surrendered more than 130 points four times since January, a troubling trend the coaching staff continued addressing.
CJ McCollum, acquired from the Washington Wizards, posted 38 points against Minnesota—his highest output in 15 games since the trade. However, he managed just 12 points in 28 minutes during the earlier Charlotte matchup.
Season Series Remains Balanced
The clubs had split their first two meetings this season, with home teams winning each contest on November 23 and December 18. Moussa Diabate established himself as the top rebounder in all three matchups between the teams, while Knueppel led Charlotte in scoring in both previous games.
Following this All-Star break finale, both teams would enjoy an eight-day respite before resuming their push through the final stretch of the regular season. The result would provide either club with momentum—or necessary perspective—heading into the second half of their championship pursuits.
