Heat Face Utah Without Herro as Injury Woes Continue

Spoelstra Offers ‘Progress’ Update Despite Herro’s Ongoing Rib Injury

The Miami Heat squared off against the Utah Jazz on Monday night with one of their star offensive weapons unavailable, as Tyler Herro remained sidelined with a right costochondral rib injury that has kept him out for 14 consecutive games.

Despite the injury setback, Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra expressed cautious optimism about Herro’s recovery status, though he offered no specific timeline for the 26-year-old guard’s return. ‘I don’t have a timeline, but I can tell you he is making progress, and he’s doing what he needs to do behind the scenes,’ Spoelstra said before Monday’s matchup.

Season-Long Availability Crisis

Herro’s injury troubles have defined the Heat’s 2025-26 season. The All-Star guard has appeared in just 11 games this season, averaging 21.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 49.7% from the field and 35.8% from beyond the arc. His absence totals 44 missed contests across multiple ailments, starting with offseason ankle surgery that kept him out the first 17 games.

The Jazz and Heat contest came as Miami navigates a difficult stretch heading into the All-Star break. The Heat entered the game with a 28-26 record, sitting eighth in the Eastern Conference. Beyond Herro, the team also dealt with Norman Powell and Pelle Larsson unavailable for the matchup.

Utah’s Reinforcements

Utah comes into the matchup with newfound depth following the trade deadline acquisition of Jaren Jackson Jr., a scoring threat who also excels on the defensive end. The addition gives the Jazz increased flexibility in their lineup construction heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

Looking Ahead

With one game remaining before the All-Star break on February 20 against the Atlanta Hawks, the Heat will hope for some roster recovery. Herro is expected to use the extended break as an opportunity to fully recuperate from his rib injury. Spoelstra praised Herro’s work ethic and mental resilience, noting his ‘resolve’ and commitment to regaining fitness despite the mounting setbacks.

‘He has grit. He fights through and focuses on the things that he can control. Right now, it’s just getting healthy,’ Spoelstra explained, underscoring the player’s determination to return to full strength.
