Memphis Grizzlies vs. New Orleans Pelicans
The Memphis Grizzlies extended their winning streak as they faced off against the struggling New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, January 23, with both teams battling through significant roster challenges and recent offensive struggles.
Game Recap
Playing without star point guard Ja Morant, who was sidelined by a UCL sprain in his left elbow, the Grizzlies managed to maintain their momentum against a Pelicans team spiraling through a 14-loss stretch in their last 16 games. Memphis improved to 18-24 on the season, while New Orleans fell further with a 10-36 record.
Injury Concerns Mount for Both Squads
Morant’s absence represented the latest setback for Memphis, which has struggled with consistency this season. The two-time All-Star had just recently returned from a six-game absence due to a right calf contusion before sustaining the new elbow injury.
The Pelicans faced their own injury crisis heading into the matchup. Zion Williamson, dealing with illness, was questionable but started and attempted to contribute despite not playing at full capacity. Herb Jones remained sidelined with a right ankle sprain after missing 15 of the last 16 games, and backup point guard Jose Alvarado continued his absence due to a left oblique strain.
Teams Fighting Through Parity
Both squads have struggled to find consistency in a league defined by increased competitive balance. The Grizzlies have dropped eight of their last 11 contests, while interim head coach James Borrego expressed frustration with the Pelicans’ tendency to fall behind early, having trailed by double digits in the first quarter during three of their last four games.
“It’s tough to play from behind every night,” Borrego said. “At some point that group has to make a stand or I’ve got to pivot.”
Looking Ahead
The Pelicans continue their uphill battle to salvage their season, while Memphis looks to maintain its winning ways despite ongoing personnel concerns that could derail their playoff aspirations.
