Georgian Figure Skater Egadze Wins Historic European Championship

Georgian figure skater makes history with commanding European title

Nika Egadze has claimed gold at the 2026 ISU European Figure Skating Championships in Sheffield, becoming the first Georgian man to win the prestigious title. The 23-year-old delivered clean performances in both the short program and free skate, earning a total score of 273.00 points and cementing his status as a rising force in international figure skating.

Egadze’s victory represents a watershed moment for Georgian figure skating. His dominant performances—placing first in both segments of the competition—showcased the technical precision and artistic maturity he has developed over years of dedicated training.

An Unconventional Path to the Podium

Egadze’s journey to European champion status was far from conventional. He first laced up skates at age six in Tbilisi, pursuing the sport as a casual hobby on a modest 20-by-20 meter ice rink. When that rink closed for repairs three years later, his skating came to an abrupt halt—a gap that lasted until he was 12 years old.

His return to competitive skating involved significant setbacks. Multiple foot fractures threatened to end his career entirely, but his determination and the guidance of coach Eteri Tutberidze proved instrumental in his comeback. Tutberidze’s intervention convinced Egadze to continue training when he was ready to quit.

Building a Competitive Edge

Training under Tutberidze’s direction in Moscow, Egadze has steadily progressed through international competition. Prior to his European title, he earned a bronze medal at the 2025 Grand Prix de France and claimed multiple gold medals on the ISU Challenger Series circuit.

His competitive breakthrough accelerated in recent seasons, improving from a 28th-place finish at the 2021 European Championships to his historic gold medal performance. Egadze’s technical repertoire includes a quadruple Lutz—one of the most challenging jumps in the sport—which has become a signature element of his programs.

Looking Forward

The Sheffield victory positions Egadze among the elite male figure skaters on the international stage. His achievement also provides momentum for Georgian figure skating, following the nation’s success in the pairs competition at the same championships. With continued development and competitive opportunities, Egadze is positioned to represent Georgia at future World Championships and potentially the Olympics.
