Georgia’s Strong Second-Half Rally Secures Conference Victory
No. 18 Georgia defeated South Carolina 75-70 on Saturday afternoon at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, bouncing back from an early deficit to secure the Bulldogs’ second Southeastern Conference win of the season.
Forward Kanon Catchings led the charge for Georgia with a season-high 20 points, draining four three-pointers while adding seven rebounds and four assists. Center Somto Cyril delivered an equally impressive performance, posting 18 points on perfect shooting from the floor while grabbing five rebounds and swatting three blocks.
Georgia’s Dominant Second Half
Georgia’s UGA basketball team trailed 40-34 at halftime but took control of the pace in the second half, outscoring South Carolina 41-30 after intermission. The Bulldogs’ defense tightened significantly, forcing the Gamecocks into a shooting drought during the critical middle stages of the final period.
Despite struggling from three-point range, connecting on just 6-of-27 attempts, Georgia compensated with exceptional free throw shooting, making 17-of-22 from the stripe down the stretch—a critical factor in the close contest.
South Carolina Falls Short Despite Strong Start
South Carolina basketball got off to a promising start behind Mike Sharavjamts, who finished as the team’s leading scorer with 18 points and six rebounds. The Gamecocks entered halftime with a six-point advantage, hoping to build on Tuesday’s impressive 78-68 road victory over LSU.
However, the Georgia vs South Carolina matchup unfolded differently after intermission, as the Bulldogs’ adjustments stifled the Gamecocks’ offense and prevented them from capitalizing on their early momentum.
Georgia Maintains Tournament Trajectory
The victory improved Georgia to 13-2 overall and 2-1 in SEC play, helping the Bulldogs recover from a road loss to Florida earlier in the week. Head coach Mike White’s squad avoided falling out of the rankings conversation and positioned itself favorably for continued conference success.
South Carolina, now 10-6 overall and 1-2 in league play, will look to rebound in upcoming contests as the Gamecocks seek consistency in their conference schedule.
Looking Ahead
Georgia returns home Tuesday to face Ole Miss before hosting No. 17 Arkansas on Saturday, with both games presenting opportunities to build momentum in conference play. The Bulldogs’ balance between offensive firepower and defensive discipline will be key as they navigate the increasingly competitive SEC landscape.
