French Ice Dancers Beaudry and Cizeron Claim Olympic Gold, Upset American Favorites
Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron delivered an upset victory in ice dance at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, claiming gold and ending the American quest for individual honors. The French duo’s triumph over three-time world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates marks a significant moment in the competition, as the Americans sought their first individual gold medal after decades of dominance in the sport.
Beaudry and Cizeron scored 90.18 points in the rhythm dance on Monday before securing their place atop the podium following Wednesday night’s free dance competition. The margin of victory came down to crucial execution, as a mistake on the pattern step by Chock and Bates proved decisive. Despite their strong showing, the American pair finished with 89.72 points in the rhythm dance, leaving them with ground to make up heading into the final segment.
Path to Milano Cortina Glory Amid Controversy
The French ice dancers’ journey to Milano Cortina has been marked by significant personal and professional challenges. Beaudry, who previously skated for Canada, faced uncertainty when Skate Canada suspended her former partner Nikolaj Sorensen for alleged “sexual maltreatment.” Though the suspension was overturned in June on jurisdictional grounds, the case remains pending. She found a new partner in Cizeron, who had stepped away from competitive skating after winning Olympic gold with Gabriella Papadakis in 2022.
However, controversy has followed Cizeron as well. Papadakis recently published a memoir, “So As Not To Disappear,” in which she accused her longtime partner of being demanding, controlling, and emotionally manipulative. Cizeron has categorically denied the allegations, accusing Papadakis of orchestrating a “smear campaign.” Despite the swirling distractions, the French pair has remained focused on their competitive goals.
American Champions Seek Redemption
For Chock and Bates, the Milano Cortina competition represents their best opportunity yet to capture the individual gold medal that has eluded them throughout their careers. The pair successfully defended America’s team gold medal just 24 hours before the rhythm dance, achieving their second consecutive team title. However, after finishing fourth at the Beijing Games, the individual medal has become their primary objective.
Canada’s Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier secured the bronze medal with 86.18 points, rounding out the podium in a closely contested competition that showcased the depth of international ice dance talent at these Games.
Looking Ahead
The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics continue to deliver compelling performances across multiple sports, with French athletes making their mark on the global stage. The ice dance competition has demonstrated that upsets are possible when technical precision and artistic expression align perfectly under Olympic pressure.
