Femke Kok Claims Olympic Gold in Speed Skating 500m with Record-Breaking Performance
Femke Kok of the Netherlands won the women’s 500m speed skating gold medal Sunday at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, setting an Olympic record and securing the first Dutch gold in the distance. The 25-year-old skater crossed the finish line in 36.49 seconds, shattering the previous Olympic record of 36.94 and extending her remarkable two-year, 20-race undefeated streak in the event.[2]
The Netherlands dominated the podium with a 1-2 finish as Kok’s teammate Jutta Leerdam claimed silver, finishing 0.66 seconds behind—marking the largest margin of victory in the event since 1972.[2] Japan’s Miho Takagi, a middle-distance legend, rounded out the podium with bronze.[2]
Kok’s Dominant Run to Glory
Kok’s dominance in the 500m has been extraordinary. The three-time reigning world champion opened the 2025-26 season by setting a world record with a time that shaved 0.27 seconds off the previous mark, which had stood untouched since 2013.[1] Her undefeated streak began on February 4, 2024, when she claimed silver at a World Cup event and has continued uninterrupted since.[2]
Her Olympic performance reinforced her status as one of speed skating’s elite sprinters. The record-breaking time not only eclipsed the Olympic standard but also surpassed her own sea-level record of 36.87 seconds.[2]
Jackson Falls Short of Defending Title
Defending Olympic champion Erin Jackson of the United States finished fifth, unable to repeat her historic 2022 gold-medal performance when she became the first Black American woman to win an Olympic speed skating medal.[2] Jackson, 33, battled health setbacks in recent years, including a hamstring injury sustained before the third World Cup event of this season.[2] Before this year, she had secured back-to-back World Cup titles in the distance and gold medals at the 2024 and 2025 Four Continents Championships.[2]
Historic Significance for Dutch Speed Skating
The Netherlands’ 1-2 finish represents a significant achievement for Dutch speed skating, securing their first Olympic gold in the women’s 500m distance. Historically, the Netherlands has dominated international speed skating, and this victory underscores their continued excellence in the sport.[1]
Speed skating action continues at the Milan Cortina Olympics with team pursuit semifinals and finals scheduled for Tuesday, February 17.[2]
