Dolphins Release Tyreek Hill in Cap-Clearing Move
The Miami Dolphins have released wide receiver Tyreek Hill, marking the end of his nearly decade-long tenure with the franchise. The move comes as the organization pivots under new general manager JonEric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley, clearing $22.8 million in salary cap space for 2026.
Hill, an eight-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro, suffered a dislocated knee and torn ACL in September during the 2025 season, ending his year after just four games. The 31-year-old, who turns 32 on March 1, will now enter unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career while recovering from the significant leg injury.
The decision to release Tyreek Hill avoids $11 million in guaranteed salary that would have become fully guaranteed this month under his three-year, $90 million contract extension. His departure also marks the end of his eight-season streak of 800-plus receiving yards.
End of an Era for Miami Dolphins
Hill was acquired by the Dolphins in a trade from the Kansas City Chiefs ahead of the 2022 season and became a cornerstone of the offense during his time in Miami. Over four seasons with the Dolphins, he amassed 4,733 receiving yards and 28 total touchdowns while establishing himself as one of football’s elite deep threats.
His final season in Miami was limited by injury, finishing with just 21 catches for 265 yards and one touchdown—a dramatic decline from his previous production years. The move reflects the organization’s broader roster overhaul as they address salary cap constraints that currently sit approximately $17.4 million over the 2026 ceiling.
Part of Larger Restructuring
The release of Tyreek Hill is part of a sweeping roster adjustment by the new regime. The Dolphins also released edge rusher Bradley Chubb and guard James Daniels in a bid to create cap flexibility. Chubb’s departure eliminates approximately $7.3 million against the salary cap and leaves the team needing defensive reinforcements on the edge.
Hill’s availability in free agency sets the stage for significant interest from contending teams seeking offensive firepower, though questions remain about his timeline to return to full health following his substantial knee injury.
