Indiana football stands one win away from making college football history, and billionaire alumnus Mark Cuban has played a pivotal role in the program’s stunning transformation. The unbeaten Hoosiers will face Miami in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday night, seeking the first perfect season of the 12-team playoff era.
Cuban, the former majority owner of the Dallas Mavericks, has been Indiana’s biggest NIL donor over the past two seasons, providing multi-million dollar funding that helped recruit and retain top transfer portal talent. His strategic investments have been instrumental in turning a program that won just three games in 2023 into a national powerhouse.

The turnaround under head coach Curt Cignetti, who won the 2025 Coach of the Year award, ranks among the greatest in sports history. Led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza, Indiana has assembled a roster featuring transfers like quarterback Josh Hoover (valued at least $2.1 million in NIL), receiver Nick Marsh, and edge rusher Tobi Osunsanmi.
When discussing his approach to funding the program, Cuban emphasized strategic allocation rather than simply outbidding competitors. “It’s like the NBA salary cap,” Cuban explained on Sideline Stories. “You’ve got to be able to fit in slots and find the guys who know their roles.”

The 1981 Indiana graduate increased his donations for the 2026 transfer class after seeing the success of his first-year investment. While Cuban has not disclosed exact figures, he indicated his latest contribution exceeded the previous year’s amount. He previously donated $5 million to build a sports media center and $6 million for the school’s rugby program.
“The first time it was like, OK, let’s see what happens,” Cuban said. “The second time, we know it works. I talked to them about different players and what their strategy was. The previous year, it all made sense and I wanted to be part of it.”
A Coach-Donor Partnership
Cignetti has praised Cuban’s involvement, describing his approach as transformative. “He literally has turned the concept of ‘Blue Blood’ programs on its head,” Cuban told The Athletic. “Cig’s line of ‘production over potential’ says it all. Some people might not like this analogy, but it’s far more like building a professional organization, but with limits on how long a player can stay.”
Cignetti acknowledged Cuban’s impact in turning the program around. “We’ve got a lot of alums, a lot of rich alums. Mark Cuban is a very visible guy,” the coach said. “If he keeps doubling his donation, it’ll be big one day.”
As Indiana prepares for the national championship, Cuban plans to attend the game. The billionaire’s commitment to Indiana football shows no signs of slowing down, positioning the program for continued success regardless of Monday night’s outcome.
