Chiefs Request Interview with Eric Bieniemy for Offensive Coordinator Role
The Kansas City Chiefs have formally requested permission to interview Eric Bieniemy for the offensive coordinator position, marking a significant move in the franchise’s offseason coaching restructuring.[2] Bieniemy, currently serving as the Chicago Bears’ running backs coach, would reunite with the organization where he previously held the same coordinator role with considerable success.
Bieniemy’s availability comes as the Bears’ 2025 season concluded with a divisional-round loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Despite the playoff exit, the Bears’ offensive performance under Bieniemy’s guidance impressed, with the rushing attack ranking third in the league in total yards and yards per attempt at 4.9. The dynamic combination of D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monogai generated 14 rushing touchdowns between them during the season.
A Familiar Face for Kansas City
The Chiefs interview request signals the likely end of Matt Nagy’s tenure as offensive coordinator in Kansas City. Nagy, who is a frontrunner for the Tennessee Titans head coaching vacancy, has seen his contract expire with the defending Super Bowl champions.[1] His departure would clear the path for Bieniemy, who previously served as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022.
During his five-year stint as Kansas City’s offensive coordinator under head coach Andy Reid, Bieniemy established an impressive track record. The Chiefs’ offense never ranked lower than No. 6 overall in yards or points and led the league multiple times in both categories, establishing himself as one of the premier coordinators in professional football.[1]
Bieniemy’s NFL Journey
After leaving Kansas City, Bieniemy transitioned to the Washington Commanders as part of Ron Rivera’s coaching staff before being released following the 2023 season.[3] He subsequently joined UCLA as associate head coach and offensive coordinator in the college ranks before rejoining the NFL with the Bears under head coach Ben Johnson.
The Chiefs have already made substantial changes to their coaching staff, parting ways with both their running backs coach Todd Pinkston and wide receivers coach Connor Embree as part of a broader overhaul.
