BYU Dominates Utah Behind Dybantsa’s Freshman Record

No. 13 BYU Sweeps Season Series with Dominant 91-78 Victory Over Utah

AJ Dybantsa’s historic 43-point performance powered No. 13 BYU to a convincing 91-78 victory over Utah on Saturday, showcasing the Cougars’ firepower as they prepare for a high-stakes matchup with No. 1 Arizona.

Record-Setting Performance

Dybantsa’s 43 points broke the BYU freshman scoring record previously held by Danny Ainge, establishing the dynamic guard as one of the nation’s most explosive young talents. The Provo native shot 15 for 24 from the field and a perfect 9 for 10 from the free throw line in his first 40-point game of the season. Beyond scoring, Dybantsa contributed six rebounds, three assists, and one block, demonstrating his all-around impact.

Balanced Attack

The Cougars received strong support from their supporting cast. Rob Wright III added 21 points while Richie Saunders chipped in 12 points, helping BYU establish a 42-37 halftime lead. The team’s execution sharpened in the second half as they shot 60% from the field after intermission, pulling away decisively in the final quarter.

A pivotal 14-3 run capped by Dybantsa’s layup extended BYU’s lead to 69-56 with just under 10 minutes remaining. Dybantsa then scored four baskets across five possessions—including a dunk and three 3-pointers—to push the margin to 87-68 with 3:12 left, effectively sealing the victory.

Utah’s Offensive Effort Falls Short

Despite a strong three-point shooting performance, Utah (9-11, 1-6 Big 12) couldn’t overcome BYU’s balanced attack. Keanu Dawes led the Utes with 23 points and six rebounds, while Terrence Brown added 22 points. Dom McHenry contributed 16 points as Utah made 62% of its three-point attempts but couldn’t match BYU’s overall efficiency.

Season Series and Road Ahead

The victory gives BYU a clean sweep of the season series after the Cougars won the first matchup 89-84 in Salt Lake City on January 10. BYU improves to 17-2 overall with a 5-1 Big 12 record, positioning the team favorably in conference standings behind undefeated Arizona and Houston.

The Cougars now face their biggest test yet with a Monday night home matchup against No. 1 Arizona, a team looking to maintain its perfect conference record. Utah will look to bounce back when it hosts Oklahoma State on January 31st.
