Bills Fire McDermott After Nine Years, Playoff Loss

Buffalo Bills Make Major Coaching Change, Fire Sean McDermott

The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott on Monday, ending a nine-year tenure marked by regular-season success but postseason disappointment. The decision came two days after the Bills’ 33-30 divisional round loss to the Denver Broncos in overtime.

McDermott departs with a 98-50 regular-season record and led the Bills to the playoffs in eight of nine seasons, the longest active streak in the NFL. However, despite the historic playoff consistency and having 2024 MVP quarterback Josh Allen on the roster, McDermott never guided the team to a Super Bowl appearance—a threshold Bills owner Terry Pegula indicated was necessary for continued success.

Why the Bills Fired Their Head Coach

The decision to fire the Buffalo Bills head coach reflects frustration with the team’s inability to advance deep into the playoffs despite dominant regular seasons. McDermott won 10 or more games in seven consecutive seasons, yet the Bills’ last three playoff losses were all decided by three points or fewer, including two losses to the Kansas City Chiefs in AFC Championship Games.

In Saturday’s loss, a critical error before halftime proved costly when the Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen fumbled while trying to advance downfield instead of running down the clock, allowing Denver to add a field goal. This type of late-game execution failure highlighted concerns about the team’s ability to finish in crucial moments.

Brandon Beane Retained, Will Lead Search for New Head Coach

The Bills are retaining general manager Brandon Beane, who has been promoted to president of football operations. Beane will oversee the search for the next Buffalo Bills head coach and now has full control of the football side of the organization—a change from his previous reporting structure where he reported directly to Pegula.

Pegula’s statement emphasized that organizational restructuring and consolidating decision-making authority under one person was necessary to reach the Super Bowl. The decision suggests confidence in Beane’s vision for the franchise despite recent criticisms about the strength of weapons surrounding Allen and underwhelming draft and free agency additions.

McDermott’s Legacy and Next Steps

McDermott transformed the Bills from a struggling franchise into one of the NFL’s most consistently successful teams since taking over in 2017. His 8-8 postseason record, however, represents the gap between regular-season achievement and playoff performance that ultimately led to his dismissal.

The Buffalo Bills coaching search comes amid a wider NFL coaching carousel, with 10 head coaching changes this offseason. McDermott is expected to be a candidate for other NFL vacancies, and sources indicate he plans to continue coaching. The Bills job remains attractive due to having an elite quarterback in Allen, though the new coach will face immediate pressure to advance past the divisional round and compete for the franchise’s first Super Bowl title.
