Austin Hill Dominates Daytona in NASCAR O’Reilly Win
Richard Childress Racing’s No. 21 driver led 78 of 120 laps and swept both stages to capture the 2026 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series season-opener at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night, marking his fourth victory at the high-speed oval in the series.
Hill’s commanding performance in the NASCAR O’Reilly series came despite a crash-filled race that saw multiple red flags and incidents throughout the evening. His ability to navigate the treacherous conditions and maintain control through the final restart demonstrated why he remains one of drafting track racing’s elite competitors.
Dominant from Start to Finish
Hill’s dominance was evident from the opening stages, as he led the field to the green flag in Stage 1 and never relinquished control through the second stage break. His teammate Jesse Love shadowed him throughout much of the race, with Richard Childress Racing securing a 1-2 positioning heading into the final stage.
The final stage proved most dramatic, with Hill needing to charge through the field following pit stops with 24 laps remaining. After restarting 12th, he quickly climbed back to contention and ultimately held off aggressive challenges from Brennan Poole, Justin Allgaier, and Jordan Anderson in the closing laps.
Career Milestone at Daytona
The victory extended Hill’s impressive résumé on superspeedways. He now owns 15 total wins in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, with an astonishing 11 coming on drafting tracks. His four Daytona victories in the NASCAR Xfinity competition demonstrate his mastery of the facility and its unique racing characteristics.
“Drove right up through there, and then I wanted to work with my teammate there at the end, Jesse,” Hill said after the race. “But I just knew that the bottom was going to surge. The top lane always gets discombobulated, and they move around a lot, and everyone’s trying to screw everybody over. So I just thought the bottom lane was probably the best thing for me.”
Chaotic Conditions Test the Field
Saturday’s race tested drivers’ resilience through multiple cautions and incidents. A multi-car wreck erupted before the initial green flag even waved, while subsequent crashes involving multiple drivers—including a major incident with 29 laps remaining—kept the field on edge. Corey Day, competing full-time with Hendrick this season, had two near-misses with the wall but managed to keep his car intact.
Richard Childress Racing’s strong showing in the season-opener signals a competitive campaign ahead as the NASCAR O’Reilly series heads into its 2026 schedule with Hill as an early favorite for the championship.
