Astros Acquire Loperfido From Blue Jays in Trade

Houston brings back former prospect in exchange for outfielder Jesús Sánchez

The Houston Astros reacquired outfielder Joey Loperfido from the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday in exchange for Jesús Sánchez, general manager Dana Brown announced. The move marks Loperfido’s return to the organization that selected him in the seventh round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Duke University.

Loperfido, 26, spent the 2025 season split between Triple-A Buffalo and the majors with Toronto after being traded to the Blue Jays in July 2024 as part of a four-player deal that brought left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi to Houston. In his two MLB stints with the Blue Jays, Loperfido produced at an impressive rate, batting .333 with four home runs and 14 RBI across 41 games while posting an .879 OPS.

The outfielder is expected to join the Astros’ spring training camp in West Palm Beach on Saturday.

Financial Impact

The trade provides significant payroll relief for Houston. Sánchez, 28, carries a $6.8 million salary in 2026 and remains eligible for arbitration next winter. The left-handed hitter was acquired by the Astros from the Marlins on July 31 of last season and appeared in 134 games, batting .237 with 21 doubles, 14 home runs, and 48 RBI while posting a .699 OPS.

By contrast, Loperfido is not yet eligible for arbitration and will earn close to the $780,000 minimum salary, substantially reducing the Astros’ payroll commitment.

Toronto’s Rationale

The Blue Jays acquire a left-handed hitter with established MLB experience in Jesús Sánchez, providing depth at the outfield position. The timing comes following news that Toronto outfielder Anthony Santander will undergo shoulder surgery and is expected to miss 5 to 6 months.

Career Context

Over 122 career MLB games between Houston and Toronto, Loperfido has slashed .248/.297/.392 with 29 extra-base hits and 39 RBI. Sánchez holds a .239/.307/.420 career slash line across 580 games between Miami and Houston over six seasons, with 73 home runs and 238 RBI.
