Apple TV, Music Services Hit by Massive Outage

A widespread outage took down dozens of Apple services on Tuesday evening, leaving users unable to stream content, download apps, or access critical business tools. The disruption, which began around 6:48 p.m. Eastern Time on January 20, expanded significantly throughout the night, affecting nearly 30 services by 9:22 p.m. ET.

What went down: The initial wave of service failures included Apple TV, Apple TV Channels, Apple Music, the App Store, and iTunes Store. As the outage progressed, the scope broadened dramatically. By evening, Apple’s System Status page confirmed issues with iCloud Mail, iMessage, Apple Maps Traffic and routing, Photos, News, and iWork for iCloud were also experiencing problems.

Developers faced separate challenges, with Apple TV not working alongside critical infrastructure including App Store Connect, App Store Connect – App Processing, TestFlight, Xcode Cloud, and the Apple News API.

Impact on Users and Developers

The outage prevented consumers from accessing streaming services and making purchases across Apple’s digital ecosystem. Users attempting to download apps or update existing ones found themselves unable to proceed. For Apple Music subscribers experiencing disruptions, playback and playlist access became unavailable.

The apple tv outage also disrupted content providers and developers who rely on Apple’s platforms. Publishers could not submit apps, process payments, or access testing tools—effectively halting their ability to deploy updates and new applications to users worldwide.

Apple’s Response

Apple acknowledged the incidents across both its consumer and developer-facing status pages. The company stated it was performing maintenance on some services and actively working to resolve the app processing issues. However, Apple has not disclosed the root cause of the disruption or provided a specific timeline for full restoration.

“We are working to resolve this issue,” Apple stated for affected services, while noting that some outages were related to routine maintenance with no expected user impact.

When Services Return to Normal

As of late Tuesday evening, most services remained offline or intermittently unavailable. Apple has not communicated when apple tv and other services will be fully restored. The company typically updates its status page as services come back online.

Users experiencing issues should check Apple’s System Status page for real-time updates on service restoration. For developers, the App Store Connect portal status remains critical for those needing to deploy urgent updates.
