Alcaraz Powers to First Australian Open Semifinal

Alcaraz Dominates De Minaur to Reach Melbourne Park Semis

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz advanced to his first Australian Open semifinal on Tuesday, routing Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-2, 6-1 in a dominant quarterfinal display at Rod Laver Arena. The 22-year-old Spaniard moves within two wins of completing the Career Grand Slam, chasing his seventh major title and his first at the Australian Open 2026.

Alcaraz’s masterful performance extended his perfect Head2Head record against De Minaur to 6-0, showcasing the gap that remains at tennis’ elite level. The Spanish star struck with authority from the baseline throughout the two-hour, 15-minute affair, dictating play and progressively tightening his grip on the match after a competitive opening set.

De Minaur’s Valiant Effort Falls Short

De Minaur, ranked No. 6, delivered glimpses of an evolved attacking approach in the opening set, mounting comebacks from 0-3 and 3-5 deficits with increased court positioning and aggression. The Australian secured five breaks of serve in that set alone, briefly suggesting a blueprint to trouble the game’s elite competitors. However, his resistance proved fleeting as Alcaraz shifted gears decisively.

“I’m just really happy with the level that I’m playing every match, since the first round,” Alcaraz said post-match. “I’ve been increasing my level each match. Today I felt really comfortable, playing great tennis.”

Historic Milestone for Spanish Tennis

With this victory, Alcaraz becomes the eighth Spanish man in history to reach an Australian Open semifinal. More significantly, he stands on the precipice of an exclusive accomplishment—joining Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Rod Laver as the sixth man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam.

The Australian Open 2026 has marked a turning point for Alcaraz’s campaign at Melbourne Park. After quarterfinal exits in 2024 and 2025, he has now improved to a 16-4 record at the tournament, arriving at the final four without dropping a set.

Zverev Awaits in Semis

Alcaraz will face German Alexander Zverev in the semifinals—a rematch of their 2024 quarterfinal encounter, which Zverev won in four sets. The winner will advance to the championship match against either Novak Djokovic or Lorenzo Musetti, defending champion Jannik Sinner having been eliminated earlier in the tournament.
