Philadelphia Ships Young Guard to OKC Following Injury Struggles
The Philadelphia 76ers have traded shooting guard Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for four draft picks, sources confirmed Wednesday. The move marks a significant shift for the franchise as they look to strengthen their roster ahead of the playoff push.
McCain, the 16th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft out of Duke, showed tremendous promise during his rookie campaign, appearing in 23 games and leading all rookies with 15.3 points per game while shooting 38.3% from three-point range. However, a season-ending torn meniscus in his left knee derailed his momentum, and his return has not met expectations.
A Difficult Road Back
Since returning this season, the former promising prospect has struggled significantly. McCain is averaging just 7.1 points per game while shooting only 31.7% from beyond the arc and 35.5% from the field overall. His performance prompted the 76ers to assign him to the G League earlier this week, where he continued to struggle with his shooting consistency.
“The chemistry just wasn’t working,” a team source indicated, explaining the rationale behind the 76ers trade. With Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe ahead of him in the rotation, McCain had fallen out of the team’s long-term plans despite their initial investment in him.
OKC Sees Upside
The Thunder, meanwhile, are acquiring a player with significant upside if he can recapture his rookie form. At just 21 years old, McCain still has time to develop into a capable role player for Oklahoma City’s competitive roster. The four draft picks the 76ers receive give them additional flexibility to address their wing depth needs before the Feb. 5 trade deadline.
The deal represents a gamble for both franchises: Philadelphia is banking on the draft capital helping them make a deeper playoff run, while OKC is betting McCain’s struggles are primarily injury-related and correctable with proper development time.
